Prime Minister Narendra Modi has confirmed in his announcement on Saturday that India will place its bid for the 2036 Summer Olympics and Paralympics at the International Olympic Committee (IOC) meeting in Mumbai.
So what does this announcement mean for India? Let’s decode

India's sports image is being revamped

In recent years, the Indian government has invested billions in sports infrastructure and important initiatives like the Khelo India Games, which resulted in India winning more medals on the international stage.

During the recently concluded Asian Games 2023, India concluded its stellar performance with the highest-ever medal score of 107.

India's Olympic Dream

PM Modi made the announcement during the inauguration of the 141st International Olympic Committee (IOC) session at the Jio World Centre, Mumbai.

"India is very excited to organize an Olympics. India will leave no stone unturned in our efforts to organize the 2036 Olympics”, he said.

India will become the fourth Asian country to host the Olympics if the bid succeeds.

India is also interested in hosting Youth Olympics

While Poland, Mexico, and Indonesia are also bidding to host the 2036 Olympics, India

is also willing to host the Youth Olympics in 2029.

India is hosting the IOC session for the second time after a gap of about 40 years. The IOC's 86th session was held in New Delhi in 1983.

When will the  host for 2036 games be announced?

The Olympic host schedule is fixed until 2032. The 2024 Olympics will be held in Paris, France; the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles, USA; the 2032 Olympics in Brisbane, Australia.

There will be no decision on awarding the 2036 Olympics at least until the IOC’s election next year. And most likely, the decision on the 2036 Olympics will not be made until 2028–2030.

Cricket in Olympics

Cricket will be making its grand return at the Olympics at the Los Angeles Games of 2028, as officially approved by the International Olympics Committee on Monday.

Cricket's addition, which includes both men's and women's T20s, will mark the sport’s first Olympics appearance since 1900.
