Yes, we all know that you find Indians all around the world but did you know that Patel's own hotels and motels are worth $40 billion in the US?
Here's what you need to know!
GUJJU Supremacy
More than 40% of the motels in the United States are owned by Indians and out of that 70% of them are owned by Gujaratis having the surname “Patel” or “Amin”.
Flashback
It all began in 1942 when a man named Kanjibhai Manchhu Desai left Gujarat in search of new opportunities.
He took over a 32-room hotel in California.
The Catalyst
Soon Desai moved to a hotel in San Francisco, where he also took help from other immigrants from Gujarat.
The Immigrants Act of 1965 also acted as a catalyst, as now more Gujaratis were allowed to pursue their dreams of settling in the United States.
Soon, other Gujaratis also followed.
Most of them moved in as refugees from Uganda when their dictator ordered to expel of around 55,000 Indians who were living there, and a majority of them were Gujaratis.
They soon found a new home in the various districts of America.
Some Gujaratis also came from other parts of the world, like the United Kingdom, Pakistan, etc.
Expansion & Growth
By the 1980s, the second-generation kids of these immigrants started expanding the frontiers of their parent’s businesses.
These family-run businesses did not require additional staff and were very profitable.
Their network slowly grew and now dominates the industry.
A Perfect Fit
And of course, "Atithi Devo Bhawa!"
Indians were perfect for this industry, building their networks on trust, giving each other handshake loans: no collaterals, no repayment schedules, just trust.
